Freelancers and the Age of Digital Nomads
Today SnapLedger's Global Freelancer Support Package goes live. Building it made me think less about accounting and more about the world we live in — the digital nomads, freelancers and independent professionals whose work is no longer tied to geography. My anthropologist partner nudged me toward a harder question: is technology changing software, or changing people? I've come to believe it's the latter.
Today, I'm excited to share that SnapLedger's Global Freelancer Support Package is officially live.
While building it, I found myself thinking less about accounting software and more about the world we are living in today. I believe that many of SnapLedger's future users belong, in one way or another, to a broader community that has emerged over the past decade: digital nomads, freelancers, independent professionals, and small business owners whose work is no longer defined by geography.
The age of digital nomads
Some of them hold Digital Nomad or Freelancer visas and provide services to clients around the world while living abroad. Others have settled in a new country, started their own businesses, and rely on AI and digital tools to build careers that would have been impossible only a generation ago.
They come from different countries and different professions, but they share something important.
Their workplace is no longer tied to an office.
Their customers are no longer limited by borders.
And increasingly, their businesses exist almost entirely in the digital world.
In many ways, I consider myself part of this movement.
Technology is changing more than work
Since moving to Dubai, I've come to realize that technology is changing far more than the way we work. It is quietly reshaping the relationship between people, work, geography, and even identity.
My girlfriend is an anthropologist. Her academic work began with the Ontological Turn, exploring the relationships between humans and "others." Her doctoral research focused on the relationship between humans and animals. Since moving to Dubai, however, her interests have gradually shifted toward the relationship between humans and AI. She often jokes that perhaps AI should be understood not merely as a tool, but as an entirely new species with which we are learning to coexist.
Through her, I was also introduced to the field of Science, Technology and Society (STS), which studies how technology and society continually shape one another.
As an engineer, I naturally tend to view technology as a problem waiting to be optimized.
She encouraged me to ask a different question:
Is technology ultimately changing software, or is it changing people?
I increasingly believe the answer is the latter.
That realization has quietly influenced the way I think about SnapLedger.
A companion for independent professionals
To me, SnapLedger has never been just another accounting application.
I hope it becomes a companion for this new generation of independent professionals—people who have chosen freedom, flexibility, and entrepreneurship. If we can quietly take care of receipts, documents, compliance, deadlines, and countless administrative tasks in the background, then perhaps our users can spend more time doing what only humans can do: creating, building relationships, serving customers, and enjoying life.
If AI is truly going to change the world, I hope it changes not only how efficiently we work, but also how freely we are able to live.
