Becoming an OSVČ in Czechia: trade licence, the CZK 2,000,000 VAT threshold, and the flat tax option

A Czech freelancer registers as a sole trader (OSVČ) through a trade licence, watches the CZK 2,000,000 VAT threshold, and chooses between percentage expenses and the paušální daň flat tax. Social and health run 29.2% and 13.5% of the assessment base.

Becoming a freelancer in Czechia means becoming an OSVČ (osoba samostatně výdělečně činná — self-employed person), and the setup neatly registers you with several authorities at once.

The trade licence

You register through a trade licence (živnostenské oprávnění) at the trade-licensing office (živnostenský úřad). Conveniently, that single filing notifies the tax office, the social security administration (ČSSZ), and your health insurer — so one visit covers most of your registration obligations. Your trade licence defines the scope of activity you're permitted to invoice for.

The CZK 2,000,000 VAT threshold

VAT thresholdCZK 2,000,000 (~€80,000)

You must register for VAT when turnover exceeds CZK 2,000,000 (about €80,000) in a calendar year, or immediately if turnover crosses CZK 2,536,500. Below the threshold, registration is voluntary. Because the ceiling is high compared with many EU peers, plenty of Czech freelancers operate for years without VAT — but track the line so a strong year doesn't surprise you.

Income tax and the flat tax option

For income tax, the base personal rate is 15% (rising to 23% above roughly CZK 1.76m). You can reduce your taxable base with percentage expense lump-sums of 40/60/80% depending on activity. Alternatively, the paušální daň single monthly flat tax bundles income tax plus social and health for an OSVČ with income ≤ CZK 2,000,000, in bands from CZK 9,984/month for 2026. Outside the flat tax, social insurance is 29.2% and health 13.5% of the assessment base (50% of profit).

Frequently asked questions

When must a Czech OSVČ register for VAT?

When turnover exceeds CZK 2,000,000 (about €80,000) in a calendar year. If turnover exceeds CZK 2,536,500, registration applies immediately rather than from the following year. Below the threshold, VAT registration is voluntary.

What is the paušální daň flat tax?

The paušální daň is a single monthly flat payment that bundles income tax, social insurance and health insurance for an OSVČ with income up to CZK 2,000,000. For 2026 it runs in bands starting at CZK 9,984 per month. It removes the need to file a normal tax return, but it is only worthwhile at certain income and expense levels.
