What every UAE tax invoice must include

A VAT invoice missing one required field isn't just untidy — it can cost your customer their input VAT claim. Here's the FTA checklist for a valid UAE tax invoice, plus the simplified-invoice rule and what e-invoicing changes.

An invoice isn't just a request for payment — under UAE VAT it's a legal document. Leave out a required field and your customer may lose the right to reclaim the VAT, which is the fastest way to sour a B2B relationship.

The full tax-invoice checklist

A valid tax invoice must show:

  • The words "Tax Invoice" clearly displayed.
  • Your name, address, and 15-digit TRN (Tax Registration Number).
  • A unique, sequential invoice number and the date of issue (and date of supply if different).
  • A description of the goods or services, with unit price and quantity.
  • The VAT rate applied to each line (5%, 0%, or exempt), the VAT amount in AED, and the total including VAT.
  • For B2B: the customer's name, address, and TRN.
Simplified invoice allowed underAED 10,000

The simplified invoice

For smaller supplies under AED 10,000, a simplified tax invoice is enough: the "Tax Invoice" wording, your TRN, the date, a description, and the total inclusive of VAT. Handy for retail and quick B2C sales.

Why this matters now

The same discipline that makes an invoice FTA-valid today is exactly what the 2026-2027 e-invoicing system will require in structured form. Businesses that already issue clean, complete invoices will find the switch to e-invoicing a plumbing change, not a scramble.

Frequently asked questions

What makes an invoice a valid tax invoice?

It must clearly show the words 'Tax Invoice', your name, address and 15-digit TRN, a unique sequential number, the issue date, a description of the goods or services, the VAT rate and VAT amount in AED, and the total. For B2B, the customer's name, address and TRN are also required.

Is there a simpler format for small sales?

Yes. A simplified tax invoice is allowed where the supply is under AED 10,000 — it needs the 'Tax Invoice' wording, your TRN, the date, a description, and the total including VAT, but not all the full-invoice fields.

Does e-invoicing change these fields?

The core VAT fields remain, but from the 2026-2027 e-invoicing rollout invoices become structured data (XML) exchanged through an accredited provider and reported to the FTA — so getting your invoice data clean now makes that transition painless.
